- Course Description/Units:
- The 9th Grade Humanities course has two distinct aims. First, this course seeks to provide all students with a foundation in critical thinking and analytical reading skills that are transferable to all courses in high school and beyond. Secondly, the course is designed to provide students with a foundation of both literary and social studies knowledge as it pertains to analyzing and understanding the human condition. This year, we seek to understand what makes us human - what connects all of humanity? And as such, how do we express our humanity? How do we, as humans, tell our story - whether that is individually or collectively? Finally, what does it mean to be human in a world with an imbalance of power?
- All six of our core units address these essential questions and are centered on one anchor text each. Along with the anchor text, the coursework will cover a variety of nonfiction texts, primary and secondary sources, multimedia, and art history studies. Since Humanities is both an English and a History course, each text will be read and considered within a social studies framework, typically through historical events, political power, and geographical influences. The units are:
- Unit 1: Introduction to Humanities (utilizing summer reading text, primarily: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi)
- Unit 2: The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini
- Unit 3: Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare
- Unit 4: Haroun and a Sea of Stories, by Salman Rushdie
- Unit 5: In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez
- Unit 6: Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe
- ***Note: All texts will be provided by DSST: Byers High School
